Essential Camino Gear You Shouldn’t Leave Home Without

The Golden Rule of Packing Light

Before we dive into the gear list, let’s talk about the most important rule: keep your pack as light as possible. This also applies if you are taking luggage and having it transported to your next destination.

Ideally, your fully loaded backpack should weigh no more than 10% of your body weight.

On the Camino, every ounce matters. When I first started packing, I wanted to bring everything “just in case.” But after walking a few training hikes, I realized how quickly that extra weight adds up. By day three, even an extra sweater can feel like a brick in your pack.

Remember: you can always buy small things along the way. Spain is dotted with farmacias (pharmacies), small shops, and pilgrim-friendly stores.

Essential Camino Gear Checklist

Here’s a breakdown of what I consider must-have items for your Camino journey, organized by category.

1. Backpack: Your Trusty Companion

Your backpack is arguably the most important piece of gear you’ll bring. It needs to be comfortable, supportive, and the right size for your frame.

What to look for:

  • Size: 30-40 liters is perfect for most pilgrims.

  • Fit: Adjustable shoulder, hip, and chest straps.

  • Ventilation: A mesh back panel to prevent sweating.

  • Weight: Lightweight but durable.

Pro Tip: Before your Camino, do a few long walks with your pack fully loaded to ensure it feels right. You can also hire a luggage transport company to take your luggage to your next destination.

2. Footwear: Protect Your Feet

Your feet will carry you every step of the way, so don’t skimp here!

Options to consider:

  • Trail runners: Lightweight and breathable, ideal for summer.

  • Hiking shoes: A bit more support, great for rocky terrain.

  • Sandals: Perfect for evenings and giving your feet a break.

  • Men’s Footwear

  • Women’s Footwear

Other essentials:

  • Moisture-wicking socks (bring at least 3 pairs)

  • Compeed blister pads or similar blister care products

  • Toe separators if you’re prone to rubbing

Pro Tip:Break in your shoes before you go. Trust me—blisters can turn a joyful walk into a painful struggle.

3. Clothing: Lightweight and Quick-Drying

The Camino will take you through all kinds of weather—rain, sun, chilly mornings, and hot afternoons.

Here’s what to pack:

  • 2 lightweight, quick-dry shirts (wicking material is best)

  • 1 lightweight sweatshirt or long-sleeve shirt

  • 2 pairs of quick-dry pants or shorts

  • 1 rain jacket (or poncho)

  • 3-4 pairs of underwear

  • A sun hat or cap

  • Buff or neck gaiter (multi-purpose for sun, wind, or warmth)

  • SPF long sleeve shirt with hood (for sun protection)

Pro Tip: Do laundry each night so you don’t need to overpack clothes.

4. Sleep Essentials

Most pilgrims stay in albergues (pilgrim hostels), where bedding is often minimal.

Here’s what to bring:

  • Lightweight sleeping bag liner or travel sheet

  • Earplugs and an eye mask (for snorers and early risers)

  • Travel pillow or stuff a shirt into a small bag as a pillow

5. Health & Wellness Items

Taking care of your body is crucial, especially if you have respiratory or joint concerns like I do.

My wellness kit includes:

  • Electrolyte packets (to prevent dehydration)

  • Essential oils (peppermint for breathing, lavender for sleep)

  • First aid basics: band-aids, pain relievers, blister pads

  • Any personal medications

  • Sunscreen and lip balm with SPF

6. Camino Documents & Money

Keep these safe and easily accessible:

  • Passport

  • Pilgrim’s Credential (stamped along the way)

  • Credit/debit card and cash (euros)

  • Copy of travel insurance

  • Phone with charger and portable power bank

Pro Tip: Use a small, lightweight money belt or neck pouch for valuables. FYI, bring a Visa or MasterCard, American Express is not accepted.

7. Optional but Helpful Items

  • Trekking poles – amazing for hills and knee support

  • Small journal – to record your reflections and memories

  • Travel-size laundry soap – for washing clothes in sinks

  • Reusable water bottle

  • Lightweight snacks like nuts or protein bars

  • I like wearing a day pack with a bladder, it makes it easy to sip as you walk.

My Camino Packing Mistakes (and What You Can Learn)

On one of my early training hikes, I packed way too much. By mile 10, my shoulders ached, my knees hurt, and I realized that most of what I was carrying wasn’t essential.

I learned three key lessons:

  1. Less is more.

  2. You can buy almost anything you forget along the route.

  3. The Camino is about simplicity, not perfection.

When in doubt, leave it out.

Final Thoughts: Walking Light, Walking Free

Packing for the Camino is about more than just gear—it’s about preparing your heart and mind for the journey ahead. The lighter your pack, the freer you’ll feel to embrace the beauty and challenges of the Way, whether you are carrying your pack or using luggage transfer.

As you plan your pilgrimage, remember that every step is part of the adventure. The right gear will give you comfort and confidence, but the memories you make will come from the people you meet, the breathtaking landscapes you see, and the personal growth you experience along the way.
